Born in Belarus, Helen Shulkin graduated with a Specialist Diploma in Fine Arts and Drawing (specialization: Folk Arts and Crafts) from the Belarusian State Pedagogical University named after Maksim Tank (BSPU), Minsk, Belarus. She has been based in Norderstedt (Hamburg metropolitan region), Germany, since 2020.

STATEMENT

In my work, architecture and the body share one logic: injury, rupture, exposure. Walls read as skin, and the structural frame pulls taut like tendons as breaches open into cavities. Space appears as vulnerability rather than a place.

I work primarily in oil on canvas, and I also make incision-based works on paper. On canvas I build dense, gestural layers and then cut back into the surface: scraping, reopening, and repainting until the breach becomes structural. On paper I score and slice the sheet with a scalpel; at times pigment is released from behind the surface at the moment of the cut, shifting architecture from material to anatomy—making concrete intimate.

I do not depict specific places. Instead, I construct anatomical fictions that read as dissections—exposing vessels, joints, seams, and connective tissue beneath the surface. If the body extends into the spaces that shelter us, then damage to architecture is registered bodily—felt, not merely seen.
